שיר זה, שנכתב בשנת 1915, הפך לאחד השירים הידועים והנלמדים ביותר ברחבי העולם במגוון פירושים מתוחכמים. המחבר, רוברט פרוסט (Robert Frost, 1874-1963), היה אחד מהמשוררים הדגולים בארה"ב – ואף היה המשורר היחיד שקיבל ארבעה פרסי פוליצר לשירה בחייו.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay In leaves, no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
In honor of Robert Frost’s classic poem, we've created a simple lesson plan for you and your students.
Attached is 'The Road Not Taken' poem, written by Robert Frost.
We welcome you to read the poem with your students and discuss some of the following questions. Practice the poem's vocabulary using multiple-choice quizzes, flashcards, matching and spelling exercises.
For class discussion:
1. Tell us about a time you had to make an important choice between two options. How do you feel about the choice you made?
2. Do you think we should choose less popular paths in our lives? Why or why not?
3. Did you notice how the poem rhymes? Try to figure out what the rhyming words are.
4. What is this poem’s structure? Try to find the rules of how this poem is written.
5. How did the person in the poem choose which road to take? Is there a difference between the two? Do you think he was happy with his choice?
6. Is there a line in the poem that confuses you? Read it closely together and try to find out what it means.
7. For extra credit, try to write a continuation for the poem – another 5 lines. Remember to include rhyming and to use the rules of how the poem is written.
