International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed every year on December 3rd. On this day we address issues that are of concern to many disabled people around the world. This day helps raise awareness of the needs that disabled people have and educates society on how to treat disabled people.
Disability affects all societies and almost all families at some time. More than 650 million people across the globe live with disabilities. As a society we gain a lot from integrating people with disabilities in all aspects of life and work.
In Israel there is a non-profit organization called Shalva that supports and empowers individuals with disabilities and their families. Shalva encourages the inclusion of persons with disabilities through employment programs, community initiatives, and disability research.
There is a very strong link between poverty and disability. Unfortunately, in poorer countries disabled people suffer from lack of help, care, medicines and even social rights. This puts an unnecessary burden on disabled people and often adds to their feelings of frustration and helplessness.
In wealthier countries, there are good support systems for the disabled, which allow them to live full lives and enjoy many different aspects of life.
Shalva was founded by Kalman Samuels in 1990. Kalman and Malki Samuels are parents to a disabled boy. Their son, Yossi, is blind, deaf and hyperactive. Based on their personal experience with the day-to-day challenges of caring for a child with special needs, they decided to establish Shalva and help other families who face similar challenges.
